Postpartum Depression
Postpartum or perinatal depression is more than the ‘Baby Blues’. When your body temporarily suppresses adrenaline and there is a sudden drop in estrogen levels prior to or after the birth of your baby, the onset of this depression can occur.
Contributuing Factors
It is estimated that 10 - 15% of all mothers suffer or experience this type of depression.
- Low Self-esteem
- Prior depression
- Childcare issues
- History of anxiety
- Job related stress
- Lack of social support
- Poor marital or relationship problems
- Being a single mother
- Colicky baby
- Poor economic situations
- Unplanned or unwanted pregnancy
Signs and Symptoms
- Frequent crying
- Decreased energy
- Weight loss or weight gain
- Loss of appetite
- Increased sadness
- Excessive worrying
- Feelings of hopelessness
- Inability to concentrate
- Insomnia
- Irritability
- Confusion
- Emotional numbness
- Feelings or thoughts of harming the baby
